Étretat : Les Sentinelles du Chaos

Étretat: The Sentinels of Chaos

The Witness Instinct

Initially, this weekend of January 17th in Étretat was meant to be just a break, a "chill" moment to disconnect. But a photographer's eye never takes a holiday. Arriving a week after Storm Goretti, I was struck by the atmosphere of the town.

In the streets, wood had replaced glass. The shop windows, protected by thick panels to ward off the latest assaults, gave the seaside town the appearance of a besieged city, a silent and brutal reminder of the aesthetics of the Second World War. Étretat had barricaded itself to heal its wounds.

The Staircase Theater: When the Bird Mocks the Human

Sometimes, the most fascinating spectacle cannot be captured by the sensor. It requires putting down the camera, sitting, and observing. Set back from the beach, where long steps lead to the Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde chapel, I witnessed a scene of biting irony.

On a roof overlooking the path, three seagulls seemed to be parodying our human condition.

While passers-by climbed the cliff with their backs bent by effort, complaining of fatigue, the birds walked on the slate tiles, mimicking this heavy gait with unsettling precision.

A spectacle of wild humor that I chose not to capture, preferring to leave it to you, on your next visit, to look up.

Some scenes belong only to those who truly know how to look.

They play with gravity where we struggle; they glide effortlessly above our wooden barricades.

In Étretat, the seagull is not just a seabird; it is a winged social critique.

It watches us climb, toil, protect ourselves, while it uses the very violence of the air to remain sovereign.

Sentinels of the Foam

Amidst the gusts, I finally unpacked my equipment. I had to capture this superiority, this flight that taunts chaos.

In every wingbeat above the white crests, I found that raw power I seek for my future exhibition.

Whether it's these mocking sentinels defying the elements or the men and women I document daily — firefighters, police, or those the street tries to break — the lesson is the same. The instinct for life does not barricade itself. It observes, adapts, and always finds an updraft above the disaster.
